For all the nonsense that Microsoft produces, you have to admit that it has some amazing visionaries. It is instructive to see how the view is from the top of ...$49B cash.  Gates classifies the 6.9B research effort into 4 categories:

    Redefining entertainment
    Digital Lifestyle
    Redefining business productivity
    Rewiring the economy
The first two "pillars" are more consumer oriented, and is something we can easily relate to. But there is one very crucial technology which has to improve drastically if those dreams are to be realised: search.
